2011-12 Picks - MLB - Division Series Picks

By: Vanessa Demske

By this point, even the gambler with the deepest pockets should know that predicting baseball is more often than not, futile. Game 162 proved that at times, the bigger they are the harder they fall (to the tune of a resounding You’re Fired! from the Boston front office), and that announcers should think twice before thanking the production crew for a season well done with two outs and a 2-2 count in the bottom of the ninth.

There are many schools of thought on the best ways to predict the outcome of a baseball series. Turn to season stats, matchups and trends? Or believe in the almighty Mystique and Aura (whom Curt Schilling claimed to have spotted twirling on the poles at a Bronx nightclub?) The basis of my picks? A little bit Peter Brand and a little bit riding the hot hand.

Texas Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Rays
At times this season, it seemed the Rangers’ staff was a rotation of two: CJ Wilson, and Everyone Else. Since mid-July, Derek Holland, Colby Lewis, and Matt Harrison have proven viable playoff options, and Alexi Ogando’s move to the ‘pen gives Texas another late-inning fireballer. The Rangers lineup is young and righty-heavy, the perfect counter to Tampa’s left-handed power arms. However, I foresee a long series, and an eventual Rays win in dramatic fashion. Joe Maddon’s Moneyball Nouveau bunch of scrappy winners is fired up after their walk-off ticket to the postseason. Assuming he locates, the advantage often goes to the pitcher facing a lineup for the first time, and the prospect of young Matt Moore starting Game 1 (and potentially appearing in relief) should have the Rangers shaking in their athletic supporters.

My Pick: Rays in five.

New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers
Baseball is not, and has never been a prizefight, and Verlander vs. Sabathia is no different. The true Friday night matchup features the probable Cy Young (and possible MVP) winner vs. the greatest one-through-nine in the game, and the Cy Runner-Up against a lineup that pales severely in comparison. Advantage: the big lefty from the Bronx. Post-CC, the Yankees have trimmed the fat (literally, in the case of slumping Bartolo Colón), and all of a sudden Ivan Nova and Freddy García (.266 BAA despite lacking a Major League fastball) have emerged as Games 2 and 3’s starters. On the Detroit side, Doug Fister’s second-half numbers have been greatly aided by the abysmal offenses he faced, and “Mad Eye Max” Scherzer is in for a rude awakening when the patient Yankees refuse to offer at pitches outside the zone.

My Pick: Yankees in four.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. St. Louis Cardinals
To paraphrase the genie from Disney’s Aladdin, You want it? You’ve got it! And everything that goes with it! As a sweet reward for their end-of-season surge, the Cards have drawn the team with the best record in baseball for the short series. Simply put, the Phils’ tres aces Halladay, Lee, and Hamels don’t lose. And in the rare event of a falter, they’ve got a lefty-laden lineup to run out against a heavily right-handed St. Louis staff, and a wunderkind backwards-K machine in the ‘pen who calls himself Vanimal. The underdog Redbirds could be competitive against Milwaukee or Arizona, but have an impossibly tall order in the Phightin’s.

My Pick: Phillies in three.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Milwaukee Brewers
In comparison to the other NLDS series, this is a fairly even matchup. Winning begins with starting pitching, and Kennedy and Hudson edge Gallardo and Greinke by a splinter. On the whole, the Brew Crew’s rotation is stacked with solid veterans, and while the D’Backs counter with youth and unorthodoxy, even Josh Collmenter is not the silver bullet to push the Snakes over the top (pun absolutely intended.) The Brewers starting nine, which includes MVP candidates Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder and a power-hitting supporting cast of Rickie Weeks and Corey Hart, is a force to be reckoned with. While Justin and BJ’s extended families are surely rooting for an All-Upton World Series, Milwaukee stands firmly in the way.

My Pick: Brewers in four.

The Sporacle versus "The Experts" in Week 3

What in the Tony Romo did we just see on Monday? Is Tony Romo showing signs of that "clutch gene" Skip Bayless likes to say he has? Regardless, that was a gutsy performance last week. I just thought I'd pat myself on the back for my mid-game prediction that Mike Vick wouldn't last the season about 4 plays before he was knocked out of game by New York. I did say New York would be coming for his head, though. The Bills put a wrench in me getting to 12-4 this week though. I'm aiming to for 80% winners this year. That's 13-3 (.812%) on average each week. Tough goal, but you've got to shoot for the moon, right?

Week 3 Picking, 11-5 (.687%)

Here's how the ESPN experts panned out in Week 3. Highest score was 11-5.

**Even though it didn't count (and it should've) here's a replay of the Bears amazing decoy punt return against the Packers. I can almost guarantee we'll be seeing this again down the line; and likely duplicated by other copycats.

2011-12 Picks - NFL - Week 3

After a less than stellar picking performance in week 2, bouncing back this week should be fun. It feels like rivalry week in the NFL, though. Bears, Packers. Giants, Philly. Skins, Boys. Should be some good football come Sunday. Post your own picks in the comments below.

Game of the Week - Sunday, September 25

**GB @ CHI | Chicago - There wasn't really any question as to what the game of the week was going to be. This storied rivalry never fails to live up to expectations. The Bears had the odds makers baffled after their Week 1 flogging of the Falcons followed by their week 2 flopping. (Shout out to the Bears O-Line). While the Packers have been picking up where they left off last season. Speaking of last season, the last time these two teams met, Jay Cutler didn't play the 2nd half. I suspect he will this time around and we'll have a different result. Jay's got a good feeling about it. Taking the underdog, Chicago.

Thanks for your Game of the Week votes, people.

Sun, Sep 25
JAC @ CAR | Carolina - Cam gets his first "W" against Gabbert in his first start.
DEN @ TEN | Tennessee - Has anybody seen Chris Johnson? I think he kinda gets back on track this week.
HOU @ NO | New Orleans - Not quite buying the hype, Houston...Not quite.
DET @ MIN | Detroit - An 0-3 is not the way to show the Redskins what they were missing, D-Nabb.
NYG @ PHI | New York - Dear Mike Vick: They're coming for you.
NE @ BUF | New England - Buffalo keeps it close, but NE get's the "W".
MIA @ CLE | Miami - Miami really showed glimpes of potential versus NE. Maybe we'll see it again, today.
SF @ CIN | San Francisco - Feels weird picking SF this often, this early.
NYJ @ OAK | New York - Something tells me Sanchez has a big game in Cali
BAL @ STL | Baltimore - Things should be back on track for Baltimore this week.
KC @ SD | San Diego - SD gave the Pats a go. I reckon the Chiefs won't give to much trouble.
ATL @ TB | Tampa Bay - This game might actually be one of the best of the week--Tampa takes it.
ARI @ SEA | Arizona - Seattle should really give Whitehurst a try.
PIT @ IND | Pittsburgh - I've never seen one guy impact a team as much as Peyton impacts the Colts.

Mon, Sep 26
WAS @ DAL | Dallas - Romo and the boys will come to play on MNF. But I am liking what Rex is doing for Washington.

The Sporacle versus "The Experts" in Week 2

So it seems that Cam Newton might be for real--maybe the Ravens aren't for real and the Bears O-line...well let's just say I'll be praying for Jay Cutler for Sunday's game against the Packers. Week 2 was fun.

Ebbs and flows with the picks this week. 10-6 picking games in Week 2 isn't terrible, but we're hoping for more flows than ebbs next week.

Especially since the experts on average kicked my a** this week.

**Did anyone else find the Giants cheating on Monday Night Football hilarious?

2011-12 Picks - NFL - Week 2

Great kick off to the NFL season with Week 1's games. I'm feelin' like a repeat is inevitable. Cutler in the Superdome. Vick returning to ATL. Wondering to see how Tony Romo will "surprise" us. Looking forward to it all. Let's see those picks in the comments below.

Game of the Week - Sunday, September 18

**SD @ NE | New England - Last week, "Mad Chad" Ochocinco had one catch for 14 yards. I think he heard Teddy Bruschi's criticism and should bounce back with a better (not stellar) performance. But that New England defense is still suspect--Rivers and Jackson should have a big day, but NE's offense will pull away late.

Thanks again for all your Game of the Week votes.

Sun, Sep 18
SEA @ PIT | Pittsburgh - Last week's beatdown should've been a reminder that the Superbowl is over and the new season started. Steelers bounce back.
BAL @ TEN | Baltimore - Didn't see much from CJ last week--honestly don't expect much more this week with Ray Ray on the other side of the ball.
JAC @ NYJ | New York - Plaxico will have another "break out" game ('Cause he's out of prison now) annnd, the Jags are still whack last time I checked.
ARI @ WAS | Arizona - Fitzgerald > Washington's secondary.
OAK @ BUF | Buffalo - I'm on the Fitzpatrick bandwagon for at least one more week.
TB @ MIN | Minnesota - Donovan can't really be THAT awful--can he?
CHI @ NO | Chicago - Call me a Bears fan, 'cause I am. #TeamJayCutler all day.
GB @ CAR | Green Bay - I'd really love for Cam to get this upset, but it's not gonna happen.
CLE @ IND | Indy - If they have any chance of making the playoffs, they'll win this game. For the record, I'm least confident about this pick than any.
KC @ DET | Detroit - Matty Stafford stays healthy and this team is semi-dangerous. Not yet elite.
DAL @ SF | Dallas - Two late special teams scores by Tedd Ginn Jr. don't disguise the fact that the 49ers were in a late game battle with the Seahawks...
CIN @ DEN | Denver - I don't even know. Coin Flip. (Please give Tebow a chance--I know the implications, but please don't throw another season away, Denver)
HOU @ MIA | Miami - Dolphins looked pretty good against the Pats last week. Houston didn't prove much to me beating up on the Peyton-less Colts.
PHI @ ATL | Atlanta - Probably my "upset" of the week. Michael Turner ran all over the Bears with just 10 carries for 100+ yards. Ball control will be the game plan for ATL.

Mon, Sep 19
STL @ NYG | New York - All the uncertainty about the health of the Rams has me picking the home team.

Thanks for stopping by.

The Sporacle versus "The Experts" in Week 1

Week 1 is over. It was beautiful.

Tom Brady ensured that I'll be high on football until next Sunday as he filleted the Dolphins for a record setting night. Cam Newton impressed even the biggest of Cam Newton supporters and Kyle Orton, well...I'm giving it until about Week 7 that Tim Tebow will be starting for the Broncos.

As far as picking is concerned, I think I did alright in Week 1. (12-4)
Would've been 13-3 if I'd known Rex Grossman was starting. (See Week 1 picks)

The Top ESPN expert was 11-5. But we're only 1 week in so I won't encourage you to bet your bankroll on these here blog posts...yet.

**In honor of Tom's record breaking night, I thought I'd post his new UGG's commercial. I love you, Tom.

2011-12 Picks - NFL - Week 1

It's the eve of the NFL season and I don't know about you but I'm ready for some football. Fresh off a season picking 60% winners, I'm hoping to improve on last years picks Two for the Money style.

Without further ado...

Game of the Week - Thursday, September 8

**NO @ GB | Green Bay - The other night, I re-watched Superbowl XLV and Aaron Rodgers didn't look human. I've always been a fan of Brees and the boys but the Rodgers looked like Brees in '09 after having taken that little clear pill from Limitless. Should be a great way to kick off the NFL Season.

Thanks to everyone who voted for the Game of the Week.

Sun, Sep 11
ATL @ CHI | Chicago - Cutler. is. the. man. Chicago in a close one.
IND @ HOU | Houston - There's a reason I hold my picks until the day before the 1st game. No Peyton. No "W". Not sold on Kerry Collins.
BUF @ KC  | Buffalo - Last time I saw Ryan Fitzpatrick play, I thought Harvard was known for star athletes.
TEN @ JAC | Tennessee - Not sure dropping Garrard before the season opener was the best move.
CIN @ CLE | Cleveland - I've always been a believer in Colt McCoy. The Madden cover boy isn't too shabby either.
PHI @ STL | Philly - I'm not buying the Superbowl hype for Philly (even though I should considering I put money down on 'em), but I think they can win an opener versus the Rams.
PIT @ BAL | Baltimore - I'm expecting a big year from Flacco--I think he'll show up Roethlisberger.
DET @ TB  | Detroit - Detroit scared me a little bit last year--dirty player or not, Suh has changed the culture for the better.
MIN @ SD  | San Diego - The Vikings should be better this year with McNabb at the helm, but not better than SD in Week 1.
NYG @ WAS | New York - Now if Rex Grossman were slated to get the start, I'd be more inclined to pick Washington. =P
CAR @ ARI | Arizona - I'll be watching cam Newton closely just for the fun of it, but I'll be watching Kevin Kolb and Larry Fitzgerald hook up on Sunday.
SEA @ SF  | San Francisco - The Seahawks surprised New Orleans in the playoffs last year, but they won't be sneaking up on anyone this year.
DAL @ NYJ | NYJ - Rex Ryan had his foot rub and his afternoon snack. Mark Sanchez is posing for GQ. Plaxico has been through the metal detectors.

Mon, Sep 12
NE @ MIA  | New England - Golden Boy returns with a new toy. Reggie and the Dolphins won't be a cake walk, though.
OAK @ DEN | Denver - Maybe being around Tebow has given Kyle Orton some idea of what being a true leader looks like.

Welcome to The Sporacle

It's about that time again.

The eve of the NFL season is upon us. You're starting your fantasy drafts on Yahoo! and ESPN, planning your tailgate parties, and placing your futures wagers on Bodog. Ready to start making your predictions, jump on (or off) your bandwagons and verbally manage some professional sports team.

Whether you're a college football junkie coming down off your high from opening weekend, excited for kickoff on Thursday with Packers v. Saints or anxious to see an end to the NBA lockout, you've got an opinion about what the hell is going to happen.

I know. So do I.

That's why I started The SporacleA sports forum for predictions, picking, debating or whatever.

Will Peyton Manning be ready for Week 1?
What chance do the Packers have at repeating?
Can Ochocinco and Hayesworth fit with the Patriots?
How soon will Tim Tebow be a starting for the Broncos?

Last year, I ran a dry run picking every game last year using Facebook Notes and tagging friends in them.
I think I did okay. I figured I'd try it again this year with a new format. I'm starting with NFL picks only and I'll expand to other sports as I get more time on my hands.

Weekly Picking. Random Predictions. "Expert" Comparisons.

I'm curious to see what'll become of it. Hope you're along for the ride.

Thanks for reading!
